Homage to Artisans

As you read the poems below, remember that they were written in 1700 BCE. It's hard to say what life was like back then. Still, I am puzzled with the text in these hymns from the rig veda. What could they mean? Read on, while I try to make my guesses with pictures. =)

O pioneers of road and air communication systems,
Come to inspire us in our benevolent deeds.
These gracious pioneers maintain the tradition
Of doing useful work for securing prosperity
Throughout all time.
(Rig.4.37.1)

O makers of road and air communication systems,
Your threefold transport
Meant for the welfare of the people
Deserves appreciation.
Therefore, affectionate honour is offered to you
Along with other eminent people
Assembled at this solemn ceremony.
(Rig.4.37.3)

O pioneers of air communication system,
We invoke you, the designers of war vehicles,
Which have great utility in war-time.
They are fast-moving, strong, complex in structure
And provided with sensitive components.
(Rig.4.37.5)
