Spice Rush!
This is going to sound like a sales
pitch. But, I am only sharing my indian food
excitement...so please bear with me. :)
Wholefoods always has interesting "Indiany" spice mixes, and you never know how exactly you are going to use them, but they come in pretty little packages and look promising.
Last time, we tried Dulcet's Madras Curry Mustard, which is dijon mustard with some sweet and tangy spices, like cinnamon, fennel, clove, sugar and salt... I know... In concept, mixing mustard with curry seems a bit crazy, but if you think about it, a lot of south indian cooking uses mustard seeds and curry powder. So it's not entirely a kooky idea! :)
I tried it on Dr. Praeger's burgers (both the Bombay Curry and California Veggie ones) and it was lip-smackingly delicious. It is also great way to rev up a salad because it has just the right amount of sweetness and tanginess to it. And I've been told (although I wouldn't know) it makes a great marinade for meat.
But, today we were looking for Dulcet's Mild Indian Curry Ketchups and Sauces because we'd been told they are really good. I thought they'd be a nice thing to throw into any dish as a fix (this by the way is a great tip for bad cooks. always under-season your food and then add one of your favorite "spice mix fixes" to enhance the flavors. I have a whole stock of fixes, so my food never tastes the same when I remake it, but always tastes sufficiently okay!). I couldn't find the sauces in Wholefoods, so I've had to order them online.
But what I did find had me jumping up and down in excitement, cos I knew I wanted it and would love it and my mind was exploding with ideas on what to do with it! But, I didn't want to wait till i came home to go on a full-on imagination rampage. It is Urban Accents' Mango Masala Seasoned Salt. It is basically a greek salt, mango and curry mix. I am thinking "Amchur Powder with a twist' in my head. How cool is that?
I think I am going to play safe and try it first on a fruit salad tonight.
Sometimes I can't be bothered to try things before I share them on the blog. Trying can't be more important than sharing my shopping-high! Moreover, they are two very different things! No? :)
