The tone of the book is one of cynical-optimism (and felt supercilious at times). Eg: "Pakistan is not South Korea, but it is also not the Congo -- which is saying something after all"! The author says, in Pakistan, both democratic and dictatorial regimes have resembled each other, with all rulers adopting the same strategy: "a combination of reliance on the state bureaucracy, army, and police with handing out state patronage to rural and urban elites in order to win their support"... and in the end facing resistance to reform and coping with the unaccountability of authoritative bodies. The point that he makes well is that Pakistan is not a country of one people, but peoples, who are impossible to unite under a common religion or ideology. What divides them also holds them together (fear). He also says the greatest threat to Pakistan's existence is not terrorism or insurgency, but ecological change. I wish the book delved more deeply into this. I also wish he painted a more favorable picture of this country! There's surely more to Pakistan than this. The conversational quotes from people he interviewed, and his occasional attempts at humor, were a bit unremarkable and unnecessary.

Empires of the Indus: The Story of a River by Alice Albania: This is my second read of this book. The author traces the River Indus and narrates many histories that the river created or changed with its course, as she travels from Pakistan to Tibet and covers three countries, many civilizations and ethnic groups, many dangerous stretches (hiding under a burkha), and a whole gamut of emotions. What makes it particularly striking is that it is not an ecological history but a human history (again, not just of invaders or traders or religious reformers, but an oral history narrated by the common man) with a contemporary perspective. This is saying something given that it is a narrative centered around a river, and also given Pakistan's dependence on an overexploited single-river system - a possibly malevolent force of nature (and politics)!
There's a brilliant website that accompanies this book, with photographs taken, and music recorded during her travels, and an exhaustive bibliography showcasing her research!

Weather, not Whether.

Every year we go to E-street cinema to watch the Oscar-Nominated Animated Shorts. I missed the vibrance, the humor and the clever ideas of the years before, but the whimsical-yet-understated theme was a welcome change.

(I found the "highly recommended" films that did not make the nomination a lot more amusing! )

MOVIE LOG

Fiction:
Nominated films:

Dimanche (Sunday) was a Roald Dahly film about a young boy's Sunday routine filled with ordinary and surreal (or let's say nonsensical) events in a small town by a railway track.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore was about a man who is carried away into a magical world of books (somewhere in the intersection of Oz, Wonderland and the Kingdom of Wisdom) and lives the rest of his life with them.

La Luna - was about a young boy's first experience into the sea with his quarrelsome father and grandfather, for an unusual job involving the moon.

A Morning Stroll shows how a simple scene of a chicken's daily walk around a block plays out in the past, present, and apocalyptic future.

Wild Life is about the life of a young Englishman who sets out to Canada (in 1909) to be a rancher, and gets more than he bargained for.

Highly Recommended films:

Amazonia is about a little tree-frog who learns to navigate the dangerous world of the amazonian rainforest from a grown blue-bellied treefrog.

Nullarbor is about the dynamic between a brash young man who drives alongside an old laconic man on a long stretch of road in Australia's barren Nullarbor Plain.

Skylight is a mockumentary about climate change and the plight of penguins in the Antarctic.

Hybrid Union is about three automatons in a cyber-desert who impulsively compete in a race, as a result of one trying to escape an approaching cloud... and eventually form an alliance (or a hybrid union)!

Typefaces

It is true what Erik Spiekermann said about our world today. "People are reading way more than they ever did, because, what people do on the internet is read. You look at images, you look at videos, but most of the time you read. Even if it's 140 letters on twitter, or short emails, you read way more than you ever did."

This is especially apparent when you go to a country like India that is afflicted with a billboard epidemic. Outdoor advertising is so overwhelming that you have to ferret out the messages that you want to be persuaded by from all the ads around you! And it is when you are in a place whose language you don't speak, and are surrounded by text you don't understand, that you see the language of design, and how type'faces' are full of 'character'. It is the closest I have come to understanding how an illiterate person navigates the world using a kind of signage language that has little to do with the meanings of words.

Being married to a typeface-obsessed husband means my world is more ornate now than it has been all my life.
